Write one page about any section of your choice. Discuss the historical
background and the the important doctrinal themes of the section.
-Why is the Doctrine and Covenants important for us to study and understand?
-What does the Doctrine and Covenants provide us that the other standard works do not?
(I'll only ask you to remember some of the more important ones.)
-76: Three degrees of glory. 1832.
-137: Joseph Smith's vision of the celestial kingdom. 1836.
-138: Joseph F. Smith's vision of Christ taking the gospel to the dead. 1918.
-Those who die before the age of accountability inherit the celestial kingdom. (137)
-All people will have a chance to accept the gospel in this life or after death. (137)
-One of the important tasks of the next life will be teaching the gospel. (138)
-Christ taught the righteous spirits after his death and organized missionary work to the unrighteous. (138)
History and Facts
-Joseph Smith lived in the John Johnson home in Hiram, Ohio, in 1831-1832.
Here, Joseph directed the affairs of the Church and worked on translating the Bible.
-Joseph Smith probably had concerns about salvation of the unbaptized and those who hadn't received the gospel due to his own family circumstances.
-Joseph F. Smith received Sect. 138 after a severe illness and shortly before his death.
-One characteristic of religion in the early 19th Century U.S. was the desire to reinvent religious institutions even as Americans had reinvented political institutions.
-"Seekers" were those who avoided affiliation with organized religions as they looked for true religion to be re-established according to the pattern given in the New Testament. Many seekers anxiously followed Joseph Smith.
-Joseph Smith received answers to many doctrinal questions during the translation, from seemingly insignificant items to the plan of salvation.
-Often the process is as important as the result.
-In our dispensation more sacred records will come to light.
-The earth will be like a giant Urim and Thummim in its exalted state.
-Wilford Woodruff taught that the angels have already begun the final harvest, separating the wheat from the tares.
-Two prophets will fend off Gentile armies for 3 1/2 years, will be killed, and then resurrected prior to the Second Coming.
-The Apocrypha contain many good things and many things that are problematic. They can be be of value if we study them with the Spirit.
History and Facts
-Joseph Smith spent much of his time in Hiram during 1831-32 working on his
translation of the Bible.
-The Joseph Smith translation should probably be considered an inspired revision of the King James Text.
-The Book of Moses and Joseph Smith-Matthew are parts of the translation.
-The translation of the Bible was never completely finished.

-We need to learn to live by a Celestial Law on this earth if we wish to inherit Celestial glory.
- Ahman, meaning "Man of Holiness" is a name of God.
-It is hard for us to effectively serve the Lord if we have to devote all our time to our temporal welfare.
-It is hard for us to effectively serve the Lord if we choose to give our time and resources to less important matters.
-Of him unto whom much is given much is required.
-I, the Lord, am bound when ye do what I say; but when ye do not what I say, ye have no promise.
-Every man [is to be given] according to his wants and his needs, inasmuch as his wants are just.
History and Facts
-Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon were tarred and feathered in March, 1832.
-Jesse Gause was called to the First Presidency in March, 1832, but served only a few months in that office before he disappeared. Frederick G. Williams' name replaced his in Section 81.
-The Law of Consecration is the covenant we make with the Lord to help care for one another's temporal needs. The United Order or Order of Enoch is the body that administrates the program.
-The "high priesthood" can signify either the office of High Priest or the Melchizedek Priesthood.
-We are expected to provide for ourselves and our families and seek aid from family, extended family, and then the Church.
-Consecration was considered a tithing of the people.
-"One mighty and strong" is probably Joseph Smith - who would personally set the United Order straight if needed.
-The one steadying the ark was probably Edward Partridge who was hesitant to follow the Lord's directions.
-We, too, can be guilty of steadying the ark, especially with regard to our local leaders.
-The Lord has made us stewards over earthly and heavenly things. He will require an accounting from us.
-The poor shall be exalted, in that the rich are made low.
History and Facts
-By 1834 the economic situation in Kirtland was becoming serious. Many people were moving to Kirtland with few resources. The Church had heavy debts for building and other projects.
-The Church lost most of its lands in Missouri with little or no compensation.
-Debts make us slaves to others and hinder our ability to serve the Lord.
