      AVI Files

I have used AVI files for a number of animations. Uncompressed versions of the files are available and your standard media player should handle these files well. However, uncompressed AVI files are rather long and may take a significant time to download if your connection isn't particularly fast.

Compressed AVI files, however, often have problems with media players recognizing the compression codec. In particular, Windows Media Player will not play the compressed AVI files as a browser plug-in. To play the compressed files, you may need to save them to your hard drive. The problem with this is that if Windows Media Player opens in the browser window, it does not give you an option to save the file to disk. this can be remedied as follows:

    • Open Windows Media Player. Go to Tools/ Plug-ins/ Options/ File Types and uncheck the box for Windows Video File (avi).

    • To be sure that AVI files are associated with Windows Media Player elsewhere, go to Start/ Control Panel/ Folder Options/ File Types. Click on AVI and then Change (if needed) to select Windows Media Player as the default. If the AVI file type does not appear in the list, click on New to enter it as new file type.
    • PDF Files

Most of the class files are in PDF format. To read them you will need a PDF reader such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Click here for a free download.
