Reading Quiz 0 Key

Reading Quiz 0 Key

Due 3:30 pm, Tuesday, September 1st

Physics 105, Fall Term, 2009

This pre-quiz covers all the information from the syllabus about class policies, homework, grading, etc. and will take the place of the traditional first-day-of-class orientation.  It is much longer than quizzes will usually be.   If you still have questions after finishing the quiz, please talk to me directly before or after class, or email me with your concerns.  This will help us keep class time open for physics, not bookkeeping!

The syllabus, class schedule, homework set and homework submission  instructions can be obtained from the BYU bookstore or online at: http://www.physics.byu.edu/faculty/magleby/physics105.aspx

Read the syllabus, and look over the  Class Schedule and the Homework Submission Document.  This is your first reading assignment of the semester. Answer the questions below.

GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION

CID numbers are emailed to everyone who registers before the first day of class.  If you registered after the first day of class get your CID number from the class website:  http://www.physics.byu.edu/faculty/magleby/physics105.aspx. If you registered before the first day of class and did not get one in your email,  please check that the email BYU has on file for you is the one you actually use.  If you end up with more than one CID number, please let me know.  (It happens!)

Two important keys to success in Physics 105 are to
1)  find a good study group and
2) do the homework together in the TA lab where help is available.

The Physics 105 TA lab is in N304ESC and is open Monday 8am -6pm, Tuesdays and Thursday 8am -8pm, Wednesdays 8am-7pm, Friday 8am -5pm  and Saturday 10am -1pm.  It usually takes about a week into the semester for it to be fully staffed.  Be patient. They will be there.

If you would like help finding a study group, enter your contact information and times you would like to study here:

COURSE MATERIALS

Not all of the course materials are found on the course website: http://www.physics.byu.edu/faculty/magleby/physics105.aspx.  Some of the materials must be stored on Blackboard due to copyright considerations.

Lecture Handouts are found on Blackboard-Course Materials-Unit *.  These can be printed out to guide your reading and for your convenience in taking notes.  The Lecture Handouts are only a guide, and I reserve the right to change a lecture as needed.

Go to  Blackboard and look at some of the Handouts.  What kinds of information can be found on them?

IN CLASS CLICKER QUIZZES

Clickers used for Physics 105 must be registered on the class website, not the university clicker registration site.  We will post lists of unregistered/unrecognized clickers as the semester progresses.  You are responsible for making sure your clicker is registered and in working order. If the registration number on the back of your clicker is illegible, take it to OIT on the south end of the library and they will help you.

How many overall extra credit points are possible from clicker quizzes?

HOMEWORK

The homework program used by the physics department has been thoroughly debugged by thousands of students over many years.  The computer records the exact time, date and keystrokes of each submission.  If the computer tells you your answer is wrong, it probably is!  On the other hand, the computer has been known to tell students that their homework is late when it is not.  This can happen if there is an error in the initial semester setup, and it affects the whole class.  Please contact me ASAP.

Homework is due in batches of two or three assignments once a week.  What day and time is all of the homework except for the last homework of the semester  due?
