Journal Club

This is the web page for the Atomic Physics Journal Club.

During Winter Semester 2007 the journal club will meet each Thursday at 9:00 a.m. in room N 288.

The journal club is geared toward junior and senior level undergraduates and graduate students who are interested in atomic physics, but everyone is welcome to come.

Below you will find links to the articles we will be discussing each week.  Please read the article before coming to the meeting.  If you have an article that you'd like to suggest (and then lead the discussion on), please email the reference (and a URL if possible) to dallin_durfee@byu.edu.

Jan 25

A. Einstein, B. Podolsky, and N. Rosen, "Can Quantum-Mechanical Description of Physical Reality Be Considered Complete?," Phys. Rev., 47, 777 (1935).

This is the original "EPR" paper, in which Einstein and his colleagues argue that quantum mechanics can't be right.  We'll uncover what was wrong with their arguments.

J. S. Bell, "On the Problem of Hidden Variables in Quantum Mechanics," Rev. Mod. Phys. 38, 447 (1966).

This is a follow-up to last weeks paper.  We read both of these papers last year and they were very interesting.  All of the students who were present at the discussion last time have graduated.  Plus,  I wanted to come back to them, because there were some loose ends --- we thought that there might be an error in this landmark paper, and I hope someone smart enough to answer my questions will show up to journal club this week :)

Arthur Zajonc, " Light Reconsidered," Optics and Photonics News, 14, S2-S5 October (2003).

This is an interesting and not too difficult to read paper on the nature of light.  Note that this link is to a file containing several papers.  We will only be discussing pages S-2 through S-5.

B Neyenhuis, D. Christensen, D. S. Durfee, "Testing non-classical theories of electromagnetism with ion interferometry," Submitted to PRL.

This is a paper which we hope will soon be published in PRL.  I thought it would be fun for us to read and discuss --- and I would welcome any suggestions as to things which could be improved before it is published.
