OK, this is really very old news by now, but I'm still going to leave it here for the time being to flatter my vanity.
GREAT NEWS: My thesis advisor, Wolfgang Ketterle, was awarded the 2001 Physics Nobel Prize for his work on Bose-Einstein condensation!!!

LyX
There is now an installer for the windows version of LyX (and I don't use windows much anymore). But my old outdated page on LyX is still here if, for some reason, you want an old outdated version of LyX.
GNU Octave
GNU Octave is an open source, freely available numerical math program which has a lot of the same functionality as MATLAB (many MATLAB functions and scripts will run on Octave with little or no modification). It is a great option for students who use MATLAB on campus but can't afford to have it on their personal computers. If you are interested, check out the Octave home page at http://www.octave.org/. A port of the software for Windows can be found at http://sourceforge.net/projects/matlinks.
