A few people have expressed interest in LyX, a WYSIWYG (sort of) LaTeX editor. You need a few files from a few places to get everything working, so I've gathered them together and written a short installation guide to make it easy. Click here if you are interested.
GNU Octave is an open source, freely available numerical math program which has a lot of the same functionality as MATLAB (many MATLAB functions and scripts will run on Octave with little or no modification). It is a great option for students who use MATLAB on campus but can't afford to have it on their personal computers. If you are interested, check out the Octave home page at http://www.octave.org/. A port of the software for Windows can be found at http://sourceforge.net/projects/matlinks.
