Is the Book of Mormon really helpful as an additional witness of Christ?

The Book of Mormon has been subtitled "Another Testament of Jesus Christ" (I think that was done around 1985), and members of the LDS church often talk about how it is helpful to support the Bible in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is our savior. But one might wonder, is it really necessary?

I think the answer to the above question may depend on what is meant by "helpful". Does it mean "likely to bring someone closer to Christ?" In that case, I think the Book of Mormon is certainly helpful. It is full of passages which serve that purpose. Consider Mosiah 3:5-11. That must be one of the most beautiful, succinct descriptions of Christ's mission that I've seen. And I could go on and on describing passages in the book which have helped me grow closer to Christ.

But it might mean: "Is someone more likely to convert to Christianity by reading the Book of Mormon than the Bible alone?" In that case, from my limited experience, I still think the answer is yes, but I can see how people could disagree.

In a way, it is really very similar to one of the gospels in the Bible. Would someone be less likely to accept Christ if the book of Mark was not present? Perhaps not. But does the book of Mark contain some passages which help us grow closer to Christ? I think it does.
