Groundhog Day (February 2)

According to folklore, if the groundhog (a shy rodent, a species of ground squirrel), comes out of his hole and sees his shadow, he will be frightened back into his hole and winter weather will continue for six more weeks.  On the other hand, if the day is cloudy with no shadows, the emerging groundhog will be emboldened, not return to his hole, and an early spring will ensue.
