Vertical Structure

Stacked Wave Cyclone

Mid-latitude cyclones are
"deep" pressure systems which extend from the surface to the tropopause.

They are examples of "cold
core lows."

For cyclogenesis to occur,
a storm cannot be vertically "stacked" as in the figure at the
right.
(Similarly, as shown, strengthening
anticyclones cannot be vertically "stacked.")
