OZONE  PRODUCTION AND  REMOVAL

     At the surface ozone (O₃) is a serious and harmful secondary pollutant.  Ironically, in the stratosphere, the destruction of ozone by chlorofluorocarbons is also a serious environmental problem since stratospheric ozone absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

Production:

NO2 + γ  ®  NO + O,
O + O2 + M  ®  O3 + M.

Removal:

NO + O3  ®  NO2 + O2.
