PHYSICS 121

PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS

"Getting Started"         Summer 2008

BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY                                                                                      INSTRUCTOR:  CLARK G. CHRISTENSEN

Read the entire course outline.  It is found on the internet, in the second box in the left column of the course title page at

www.physics.byu.edu/faculty/christensen/Physics 121/Sp2008/TITLE PAGE.htm.

There you will find links to the document you are reading and also to "Syllabus," and "Course Schedule."  It is recommended that you print yourself hard copies of these two items.  The first quiz for the course will occur on Friday, May 2, and will cover these materials as well as your Wednesday and Friday reading assignments.  (All subsequent quizzes will be unannounced.)  You will also find on the title page a "Lab Schedule" and a message board and other supplemental material.  Please familiarize yourself with all of the posted links on the title page.  Then do the following:

1.  Get a copy of the text and the "Physics 121 Class Supplement" from the Bookstore. A few copies of the text (old edition, QC 23 .S458 1996)
may be available in the reserve library and in the Physics Tutorial Lab (N304 ESC).

2.  Verify that you have been assigned a confidential class identification number (CID#). You should have received one via email. If you have not, or if
you do not know what yours is, the method by which you can learn your CID# is described in the syllabus.

3. Locate the following:

a.  The classroom: C215 ESC.

b.  The distribution center in the hall just outside N373 ESC.  Notice the set of "121 Homework" slots; this is where you submit
homework and labs. You get them back in the open slots at the right-hand end of the center.  There are also slots for late homework
     and appeals.

c.  The Physics Tutorial Lab: N304 ESC.

d.  The display cases in the hallway near N304 ESC, where solutions to homework exams are posted.

e.  The Walk-In Lab: S415 ESC. Notice the "121 lab reports" slot just to the left of the door as you enter the lab.

f.  The reserve library if you intend to use any of the materials we have placed on reserve.  Just go to the library circulation desk and
request the item you want (by call number preferably).

4.  Also do the following:

a.  Have you read the syllabus?  If not, do so now!  Then follow the Chapter 1 Study Notes in the Course Supplement.  Do
homework assignment #1 (also found in the Study Notes) and hand it in before its deadline (11:55 am on Friday, May 2).  The
homework should be enclosed in a homework cover (also found in the Supplement) before it is submitted.  The Spring Term
assignments are defined on the internet Course Schedule, e.g., Homework Assignment #1 consists of Problems 1 and 2 of
Chapter 1.  (All homework problems are found in the Study Notes.)

b.  Complete the items in the Chapter 1 Study Notes in preparation for the next class.

c.  Read all of Chapter 2 in preparation for Friday’s class and quiz.

Good luck!  Physics 121 is a demanding course, but very rewarding for those who pay its price!  If your personal situation will make it difficult to devote a substantial amount of time and effort to Physics 121, we recommend you take it at another time when you can give it more attention!
