The constellations vary much in size and shape.  Generally their modern boundaries are a series of north-south and east-west line segments.  The largest, Hydra, covers 1302.844 square degrees or 3.2 per cent of the celestial sphere.  The smallest, Crux, covers 68.477 square degrees or less than 0.2 per cent of the celestial sphere.  The average constellation size is 468.784 square degrees.  The entire sky contains 41252.961 square degrees which is partitioned among these 88 constellations.

*Constellations designated "G" are among the 48 "ancient" constellations2 listed by Claudius Ptolemy in his book Syntaxis about A.D. 140.  Those designated "M" (modern)
have been since added to Ptolemy's list.

1The genitive form of each constellation name is formed by dropping the stricken out letters in parenthesis (if any) from the end of the constellation name, then adding the
additional letters as a suffix, e.g.,
Boötes, designatied "Boötes (es is)," becomes Boötis, etc.

2
Also known as Camelopardus (us is).

3Ptolemy's 48 "ancient" constellations became 50 when Argo was broken into Carina, Puppis and Vela.

4Serpens is in two non-contiguous pieces:  Serpens Caput (the head) and Serpens Cauda (the tail).
