The Evolution of Galaxy Mergers

Galaxies classified as Starburst are those that exhibit a very large rate of star formation than our own Milky Way. Most of the Starburst systems known are Mergers. This means galaxies in interaction. It is believe that the merging process may be the cause for the high rate of star formation. It has been proposed that the origin of the MASER emission from Starbursts is not the same than that from Star Forming Regions in our galaxy. In other words, that the MASER emission in Starbursts is not from Star Forming Regions but from some other phenomena, like possibly related to Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN).

The study of OH and H2O MASER emission in Starbursts and AGN will help us determine their nature in this environments. Also, how the merging process may be inducing MASER emission and if the masing of different species is related to the evolution of the merger.
