Remote Desktop Access For Windows

The Windows Remote Desktop server for the Physics and Astronomy Department is: remote.byu.edu

The following instructions are for Internet Explorer version 6 and for the Remote Desktop Connection program included with Windows XP.

Do not save any personal files on the desktops of the remote server or any public lab machines. Remote server maintenance may result in deleting files saved on the desktop. Public lab machines (N212, N333, N477, 4th floor labs, etc) may be reinstalled at any time without notice.

Internet Explorer

  • Open Internet Explorer and go to the web page: http://remote.byu.edu/. The following site will be loaded.



  • Click Connect
  • .
  • If there are problems connecting, try typing remote.byu.edu into the Server box.
  • NOTE: This will not work with other web browsers (Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, etc) because Internet Exploder takes advantage of ActiveX for this function.

Remote Desktop Connection

  • Click Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Communications --> Remote Desktop Connection.



  • Type the name of the remote server (remote.byu.edu) in the box
  • Click Connect.



  • If using a version of Windows besides Windows XP, download and install Remote Desktop Connection from Microsoft.
  • Search for Keywords: Remote Desktop Connection
  • This version (6.0.2600.0) was published 10/15/2004 and supports Windows 2000, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP.
