Physics & Astronomy

The department offers many options for student's computer needs. There are open labs, and various research groups have their own computer facilities. Contact your Academic Sponsor to learn which computers one should use. Access to the terminals is on a first-come first serve basis.

Each student can obtain a general use account for most systems from the department computer system manager (CSR). For access to the other systems, students need the authorization from the group or faculty running the system. Contact the CSR for detailed information.

The computer experience and skills students gain are a valuable asset, and they are often acquired through informal channels. Communication with more advanced students (undergraduate and graduate) is essential. As one becomes better acquainted with the different systems, students are encouraged to share their knowledge with others and promote a responsible use of the equipment.

The main open lab in the physics department is located in N212 ESC. These computers all run Microsoft Windows. and can be accessed using a general use account. This open lab is also used as a classroom. Check the schedule next to the door for more information

The undergraduate study is located in N333 ESC. This open lab for undergraduates also has computers running Microsoft Windows that are accessable using the general use account.

The doorcodes for these rooms can be obtained from Diann Sorensen in N273 ESC. Students are given space on the network (P-Drive) which can be accessed from any computer in the labs. It is strongly suggested that students save important files to their P-Drive, an online account (such as the university drive), or some type of removable media (CD or USB), as the local drives are formatted often.

Acoustics students who are working on research or other projects may use the comptuers located in C110 ESC. These computers run Microsoft Windows and require an general login account. They have programs installed specific for acoustics research.

Astronomy students who are working on research or other projects may use the comptuers located in N477 ESC and N479 ESC. Computers in N477 run Microsoft Windows and require an general login account. They have programs installed specific for astronomy research.

Computers in N479 ESC run Ubuntu GNU/Linux and also have programs installed on them specific for astronomy research. Accounts for these computers must be obtained by have the authorization of the Astronomy Research Group Leader.

Theory students who are working on research or other projects may use the comptuers located in N216 ESC upon permission and approval of the Theory Research Group Leader.
