Burning a CD/DVD in Linux

Methods used to burn a CD/ DVD in the Linux environment can vary from using the command line to graphical interfaces.

K3B

  • Start K3B by either finding it in the KDE / Gnome menu or by typing k3b at a command prompt.



  • K3B allows the user to create different kinds of projects, depending on what is being created. Most likely a physics and / or astronomy student will went to create either a CD Data Project or a DVD Data Project
  • Click on the appropriate icon on the bottom half of the window, or select File --> New Project and choose the appropriate project.



  • The bottom half of the window will display an area to list the files to be burned.
  • Using the top left window, navigate to the location of the files to be burned.



  • Drag and drop the files and folders to be burned to CD / DVD from the top right window to the bottom right window.
  • The bottom status bar will show how much room is taken and how much is available



  • This image shows when there are too many files / folders selected to be burned to the CD / DVD.



  • This image shows when the number of files / folders selected to be burned to CD / DVD is about to capacity.



  • K3B makes it easy to save what files / folders are to be burned for the project, and for multiple projects it is recommended.
  • From the File menu, select Save As...



  • Use the top windows to navigate to the location to save the project.
  • Type the name of the project in the Location box.
  • Click Save.



  • To burn the CD / DVD, click on the burn icon on the bottom right of the window or the fourth icon from the left at the top of the windows
  • A dialog box will appear.
  • It's best to give the CD / DVD a title. Click on the Volume Desc tab



  • Type the CD / DVD title in the Volume name box.
  • To begin burning the CD / DVD, click Burn.
